Orthodontic Treatment for Bedwetting in Children

Bedwetting or Nocturnal Enuresis (NE) is a very common problem in school aged children and their families. Not all the causes of bedwetting are known but it is most likely hereditary or because the child has a smaller bladder capacity. It may also be because your child is a deep sleeper, has a breathing problem or his/her kidneys produce more urine at night.

Usually, a child with bedwetting problem undergoes a treatment from the GP. It is a wholistic approach that involves psychological motivations, support of family, change in lifestyle and taking medications. If your child with NE is still resistant to medical therapy, according to Orthodontist, Dr. Derek Mahoney, an orthodontic device similar to braces can be used to treat this problem. According to his research and studies, children who used a Rapid Maxillary Expansion (RME) device experienced a reduction or cessation in night-time bedwetting.
